Because of the value, impact and criticality of wireless, it is essential for the enterprise to define, implement and adapt a wireless strategy. There are several barriers to effective wireless planning, including:

Separate wireless initiatives: Distinct organizational “silos” may have wireless activities that are uncoordinated with other initiatives in the enterprise. Facilities management may have two-way radio; IT may be planning wireless LANs; Telecom may be responsible for cellular/PCS coverage in the building. In healthcare, clinical organizations may be considering wireless nurse call, patient monitoring or other wireless applications. Wireless-based asset and people tracking, wireless security cameras and building automation may also be on the horizon. Construction and expansion plans will usually trigger new infrastructure plans, including wireless.

Ad hoc design: Planners are beginning to realize that “wireless is tough” and that qualified experts are needed to assure that enterprise goals are met. Just as in the case of other utilities, organizations depend on specialists to design and install systems that are dependable and allow for future applications. Implementation of uncoordinated wireless systems by separate departments or vendors is a recipe for chaos.

Lack of a wireless policy: Compatibility and security problems can derail wireless projects. A facility-wide policy requiring coordinated planning, equipment and device qualification, and security standards is essential for trouble-free wireless.

As an early stage in our customer engagement process, InnerWireless will facilitate a Wireless Planning Workshop to bring the enterprise wireless stakeholders together to review and begin to coordinate wireless plans and activities. This will help you and InnerWireless gain a broad view of wireless in your facilities across the enterprise and into the future. As a result, your enterprise and InnerWireless team can develop a strategic wireless plan and economic justification for wireless in your enterprise.

InnerWireless also offers ongoing professional services to help you protect your investment in wireless and to continue to meet your productivity and safety goals.
