Johnson Controls Installs InnerWireless® and Building Management
System at New University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital
"Behind-the-scenes"
technology provides comfort, safety and convenience for patients
and staff
MILWAUKEE – (Feb. 21, 2005)
– Johnson Controls, Inc., the global leader in facility management
and control, is deploying the InnerWireless® broadband distribution
system and Metasys® building management system at the new University
of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. The 155-bed, 242,000-square-foot
hospital will open in winter of 2005.
“The wireless and building management systems may not be visible
to hospital staff, patients and visitors, but the benefits will
be felt by all. These technologies are key contributors to the hospital’s
mission to provide the best medical care, as well as a comfortable,
convenient and positive environment for patients and their families,”
said Michael J. Crowe, vice president of technology for Johnson
Controls.
The wireless system will help Comer Children’s Hospital enhance
patient safety and overall hospital productivity through uniform
delivery of wireless signals, while the building management system
helps the hospital facilities operate with efficiency and reliability.
The InnerWireless System
“We chose the InnerWireless system because it is uniquely
capable of delivering on our vision. Specifically, we require a
wireless distribution system that could make wireless work everywhere
in the hospital, and we prefer to work with one company rather than
several distinct vendors who wanted to build separate wireless networks,”
said Eric B. Yablonka, vice president and chief information officer,
University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System (UCHHS).
The heart of the wireless utility is its engineered wireless distribution
system, consisting of cables, antennas, and other components engineered
to support the rapidly expanding number of wireless applications
and devices. From handheld devices for clinicians to two-way radios
for security to asset-tracking systems and wireless building controls,
the InnerWireless system helps improve hospital productivity by
guaranteeing delivery of wireless signals anywhere inside the hospital.
Comer Children’s Hospital plans to launch several wireless
clinical applications including Voice over IP (VoIP) telephony that
will be used to enhance communications for the Comer nursing staff.
Nurses throughout the facility will have VoIP phones that will be
integrated with the nurse call system to provide real-time alert
notification. In addition, a wireless bedside admission solution
will allow parents to stay with their child throughout the admitting
process.
In addition to providing high-quality care, Comer is well positioned
to act on its family-centered, child-friendly philosophy. Other
enhancements include the capability for patients, families and friends
to connect their own laptops and/or computers to the Comer wireless
infrastructure to get access to the Internet. This connectivity
may allow parents to work from their child’s room or could
allow patients access to on-line homework. Cellular phones will
be allowed throughout the facility and various carriers will “tap”
into the wireless utility to provide coverage for employees, patients,
and family members throughout the building, including in elevators.
Metasys Building Management System
The Metasys building management system incorporates Microsoft .NET-connected
software that permits easier, Web-based connectivity within an enterprise,
facilitating the flow of information between building systems and
other management systems. At Comer, the Metasys system not only
controls the major heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems,
it also receives and provides information to the hospital’s
emergency generators, medical vacuum and fire alarm systems. In
addition, it helps control the most critical areas of the hospital,
with software integration to isolation room pressure monitors.
